Enfants-phares 2 World jazz Rhythms and songs from Haiti Franck L. Desire is a native of Haiti and was raised and educated in Port-Au-Prince. He left Haiti at age nineteen and traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico. He then moved to Miami, FL. where he worked as a Community Involvements Specialist assisting Haitian children and their families to integrate into the American school system. In 1994 he co-founded a cultural exchange program between students in Miami, Oak Park and Chicago, and PAP. The program "Exchange of Hope" now includes a school in Buffalo: Campus North. Raised as a Catholic, he has embarked on a journey of personal discovery in the ways of life (Vodou). He is the leader of ASAKIVLE, a Haitian dance and drumming troupe that has members in Haiti and the United States. They perform Traditional Haitian Roots, or 'Racine Music' in various Venues, including Schools and Universities, educating people about Vodou. They have performed as part of the Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou exhibition in Chicago, New Orleans, Baltimore and Detroit. Franck has assisted in developing many programs for the Multicultural Department of the Oak Park Schools, and continues to consult with educators on Haitian Culture.

Swedish violin Mia is a well-established traditional musician from the western part of the county of
Värmland in Sweden. Besides being a skilled performer, she is also known as an energy-
boosting teacher of fiddle playing, music arrangement, ensemble playing and music theory.
She has graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and is now working full
time as a freelance musician. Mia is an experienced composer taking inspiration mainly
from traditional music, but also jazz and classical music. She teaches at some of the most
prestigious music colleges in Sweden including the Royal College of Music in Stockholm,
at "Eric Sahlström Institutet" in Tobo and at many different courses around the world.
At her workshops she usually combines teaching groovy tunes and arrangements with
creating new arrangements together with the participants. Instrument technique and playing
for dancing are other special interests that often pop up in the teaching process.

Tango Ensemble Hernan Ruiz Hernan Ruiz was born in Entre Rios, Argentina. He followed guitar studies in his city of birth, Parana. He later went on to study at the Conservatorio Nacional ?Lopez Buchardo? and at the Conservatorio ?Francisco Canaro?. He toured with famous argentine musicians such as Gustavo Leguizamon, Litto Nebbia, Amelita Baltar, Juan Pablo Dobal, Leonardo Amuedo and the Duo Salteño. He has accompanied legendary musicians such as Raul Barboza, Oscar Cardozo Ocampo, Manolo Juarez, Domingo Cura, Virginia Luque and Alberto Podesta.

Soundpainting Woodwinds, Educator-has been Soundpainting for the past 35 years. He conceived the Soundpainting language in Woodstock, New York, in the early 1970s. To date, Thompson has developed Soundpainting into a multidisciplinary live composing sign language comprising more than 1000 gestures. Thompson has composed Soundpaintings with many contemporary orchestras in many cities, including Barcelona, Paris, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Oslo, Berlin, Bergen, Lucerne, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik, among others, and has taught Soundpainting at the Paris Conservatoire; Eastman School of Music; Iceland Academy of the Arts; University of Michigan; Grieg Academy in Bergen, Norway; University of Iowa; Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music; and New York University, among many others.
